The Power Of Our Words
GINA LOUDON, Ph.D.
Among other things, I am a television news anchor. I make my living by delivering information to others. But where would I be if I couldn’t speak? At the very least, I would be out of a job. Therefore, it should come as no surprise to anyone, that my proof of God’s existence is the gift of speech. And what makes our speech even possible? The miracle of the human tongue.
Our tongue is unique. It enables us to articulate sounds into words, ideas and meaningful communication. Our tongue can be the greatest tool there is, while also having the potential to be the most destructive weapon on earth.
Words have tremendous power. They can be used to build loving relationships or tear them down to the ground. One’s choice of words can spread beneficial knowledge or damaging misinformation. The positive use of the tongue in one’s speech can express binding, heartfelt emotions, spread love, happiness, encouragement, affirmation, and healing. The negative use of the tongue can cause despair, hurt, hopelessness, harm, and division. Words can nurture and encourage the heart of a child, or destroy it forever. Is it a coincidence that the tongue has two “gates” - both teeth and lips - in front of it? Is it a coincidence that the tongue is the only organ in the human body that has to actually be “picked up” to be used?
Your choice of words can change your life for the better or turn things for the worse. They can create obstacles or move mountains. As the famous saying goes, “Small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events, and great minds discuss ideas.” (1)
Your words can help things become a reality or extinguish opportunities. Never say, “I can’t” because then you won’t, even if you could. The words, “I can’t” really mean, “I don’t want to.”
King Solomon said, “Life and Death are in the hands of the tongue” (2) emphasizing the impact our words have on others, as well as ourselves. Our words can corrupt our body or set a positive course for our life. The ability to control one’s tongue is a sign of inner discipline and maturity. A controlled tongue is a reflection of a mind and heart that are more focused on God.
It’s a constant challenge for everyone. But if you speak kindly, someone out there is likely going to smile and be encouraged today because of you, or remember your kindness in a dark day.
Why did God give us a tongue? Quite possibly, it was so we could reach out, sing His praise, and bless His Name. Language is the bridge where our bodies meet our souls. So use the power of your words and start a conversation with God. Today is the “tomorrow” we spoke about yesterday. Let Him know your inner needs and desires. As the saying goes, “if you don’t ask, the answer will always be no.”
So hug your children, Love God. Go BOLDLY now and live the Truth!

1. https://www.quora.com/ The quote, "Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people” is often attributed to Socrates however there are some who take issue with that. The variation of that quote, "Small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events, and great minds discuss ideas," is often attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt.
