The Father of
Mother Nature
FAHMI BASALIM
Life is an existential parable that raises more questions than answers. Its origin and destination are fascinating yet equally frightening. We find ourselves yearning to unravel the fabric of creation from evolution to present living. It is mind boggling how we traverse to the ends of earth in search of meaning and purpose. Laden with curiosity, we train a handful of astronauts to blast off to open skies in risky expeditions to discover the unknown. Mankind has always been captivated by the mysteries of time and space. Our journey of discovery leaves us wandering aimlessly in the mirage of fallible existence.
Civilizations came and went in bygone eras like giant waves serenaded by sandy shores. What is left is anthropolatry (1) personified through erection of iconic statues meant to impose a semblance of victory and posterity. The timeless quest for supremacy and mortality is forever endearing to those of greed and ambition. Power is alluring to the elite seeking to assert total dominance. Alas! Perennial wars are a direct product of a cauldron of repressed anger from loss of power, fame and glory. It is evident these lofty aspirations are unattainable by mere mortals who easily fall prey to malice, disease and mental affiliations. It is a futile race bound by time with the finish line marked by our untimely demise.
Dreams transcend human expectations to cross virtual boundaries and reach enchanting destinations. The climax of the wandering mind is shattered by an abrupt awakening. Concurrently, reality knocks hard on the door of subconscious. Just like an intruder, it enters uninvited and rummages through our cognitive disposition. We struggle in our attempts to decipher the essence of self and environment. What is our role in the circle of life? Who holds the keys that unlock our memorable past, bustling present and untold future?
Mother Nature is spectacular in adorning our world with richness of flora and fauna. Mountains and valleys usher in breathtaking landscapes that beckon lush and exotic scenery. Where sparkling rivers steadily flow into vast azure blue seas. Do these ecosystems exist on their own merit and terms? If Mother Nature is credited for these topographical marvels, then surely her “Father” reigns mighty and supreme.
We are left to ponder as to who engineered species and human intelligence. Who controls the perpetual dawn of days and onset of nights? In the absence of a higher authority, how can the measure of accountability and the scales of justice prevail? Certainly, we should fathom that a supernatural and enigmatic entity exists. He has to be absolute without rivals or partners to avoid conflict of interest, maintain harmony and divine equilibrium. One who holds infinite powers of creation, life and death. The bestower of health, wealth and sustenance. He is God, the master of universe and architect of fate and destiny. Indeed, there is plenty to mull over as we acknowledge our vulnerabilities and anticipate meeting our maker in a grand and final day of reckoning.
Footnote:
1. The definition of “anthropolatry” means the worship or deification of a human being. It is a noun that combines the Greek roots anthropo- ("human") and -latry ("worship") and was first recorded in English in the mid-17th century. The term often carries a reproachful tone and can be used in religious or political contexts to describe the act of giving divine honors to a human.
