The Hand of God in America
KIMBERLY FLETCHER
My mother went great lengths to teach me the importance of recognizing God in everything. She taught me about American history and most importantly, God’s providential “Hand” in establishing the United States of America.
You ask, “How can I believe in God in a world like this?” I answer, “I couldn’t live in a world like this without a belief in God.” And when you read the writings of our Founding Families, it becomes impossible to deny the providential presence of God in the forming of our nation.
God has been a part of America since Christopher Columbus discovered it. Columbus himself, attested to being “guided by the Spirit of God.” (1) During the War for Independence, there were numerous instances recorded of rivers suddenly rising or deep fog appearing to protect the Colonial Army. In a letter to Thomas Nelson, General George Washington wrote, “The hand of providence has been so conspicuous in all this that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith, and more wicked that has not gratitude to acknowledge his obligations…” (2)
God’s divine intervention was apparent throughout the war for Independence, but it didn’t stop there. God continued to guide our Founding Families and was ever present in 1787 at the Constitutional Convention. It began when General Washington proclaimed, “Let us raise a standard to which the wise and the honest can repair. The event is in the hand of God.” (3)
After weeks of meetings, discussions turned to arguments and it appeared that the union was about to break up. At this crucial moment, Benjamin Franklin, the respected elder statesmen said, “In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor…And have we now forgotten this powerful friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?” (4)
Stories such as these are left untold today because God has been deemed too controversial. But facts are facts. As George Washington resigned his commission as General of the Continental Army, he issued a powerful statement. "I consider it an indispensable duty to close this last solemn act of my official life by commending the interests of our dearest country to the protection of Almighty God and those who have the superintendence of them into His holy keeping." (5)
Our Founding Fathers declared and history records—Euphemistically, God is America. And if America is to continue being the wellspring of freedom and the bastion of hope for the world, we must recognize God.
