The Best Explanation Wins

RON  R.  KELLEHER

Imagine standing before a great work of art with no signature, no plaque, and no curator to tell you who painted it. No one would seriously conclude that the colors somehow arranged themselves into a work of breathtaking beauty. The painting itself points beyond the canvas to the mind that conceived it.

When I look at the universe, I don't see an accident. I see a masterpiece.

During thirty-six years at Procter & Gamble, I learned that the most important decisions are rarely made with absolute certainty. We gathered evidence, examined competing explanations, and asked a simple question: Which explanation best accounts for all the evidence? Time and again, the best explanation won.

I've approached the question of God's existence the same way.

The decisions that mattered most in my career were never based on a single fact. They emerged from a convergence of evidence that consistently pointed in the same direction. I have never believed that faith requires abandoning reason. For me, faith is not a leap beyond reason. It is the destination reason reached after a lifetime of following the evidence.

Every great work reveals something about its creator. Precision reflects discipline. Beauty reflects imagination. Order reflects intention. Purpose reflects intelligence. When I look at the universe, I see those same qualities on a scale beyond comprehension. Creation invites me to infer the mind behind it.

Its laws are so dependable that we confidently build civilizations upon them. The information encoded within every living cell surpasses anything humanity has ever engineered. From galaxies moving with mathematical precision to the delicate symmetry of a snowflake, beauty and order appear together with remarkable consistency. The deeper we investigate reality, the more discoverable it becomes. It is as though the universe was meant to be explored.

Perhaps the most remarkable evidence, however, is found within ourselves. We are the only creatures known to ask why. We search for truth. We pursue beauty. We seek meaning. The same minds that uncover the laws of nature also ask what those laws ultimately mean. We are not merely observers of the universe—we are interpreters of it.

No single observation compels belief. Together, however, they form a pattern that is remarkably difficult for me to ignore. Patterns matter. In business they reveal trends. In science they lead to discovery. In life they often point us toward truth.

Can each observation be explained another way? Certainly. Honest people reach different conclusions. But after a lifetime of evaluating the evidence, I have found no explanation that accounts as completely for the universe we inhabit—and the minds capable of understanding it—as the existence of an intelligent Creator.

The best explanation wins.

That principle served me well throughout my career. It has served me even better in answering life's greatest question. After a lifetime of following the evidence wherever it led, I still don't see an accident. I see a masterpiece.

And every masterpiece has an artist.
