The Unwavering Presence of God
RONALD G. FUENTES
I often reflect on why humanity so intensely debates whose God is “right” or which religion possesses the ultimate truth. Regardless of our beliefs, a common thread unites us: the recognition of a higher power. For me, the existence of God is undebatable, and the evidence of the divine is visible in the small miracles that grace our everyday lives.
My mother was the first to show me the profound meaning of faith and that God exists everywhere. She taught me not to grieve excessively over loss, reassuring me that every birth and passing fits into God’s larger plan. She often shared personal stories, such as when my aunt passed away on the day I was born, believing these events were guided by divine purpose, rather than mere coincidence.
Her journey is a testimony to steadfast faith. Born in El Salvador, my mother faced hardship very early on, losing both of her parents by the age of ten and later her three brothers. Despite these losses, her trust in God remained unshaken; she believed each event fit into a plan that only God could comprehend.
Faith was her compass and her anchor. As a very young woman, she got married, immigrated to the United States, and became both a mother and a stepmother. Her husband’s patriotism and determination to serve their new country led him to join the Navy and serve in World War II and Korea, leaving my mother to manage the household and to look to God for answers that came in many different ways. Throughout her husband’s many long absences, she continued to pray daily for guidance and strength.
Sudden tragedy struck when her stepson died in a car accident. Despite overwhelming sadness, she chose prayer and faith over despair. When an opportunity arose to move to a home in South San Francisco, she embraced it as God’s will, extremely appreciative even with six children in a small three-bedroom house. Every change, she believed, was a blessing that God had sent her.
In 1984, she faced the ultimate test: the loss of her eldest child to cancer. Although deeply wounded, she again leaned on prayer to find strength for herself and the family. She never allowed sadness to overcome her gratitude for family, daily joys, and the gift of togetherness, which she unquestionably saw as coming directly from God. At eighty-three, she passed away, leaving a legacy of faith and perseverance. She became a citizen, owned her home, raised six children, and was cherished by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
I am who I am because of what I witnessed. Due to the important lessons that I had learned, I feel called to carry on her legacy: to foster faith, to spread the word, and to remind others that although hardships may come, we must never lose sight of our belief in God. This resultant inner strength and calling, thanks to my mother, is my proof of God’s existence.
